Today is Veterans Day
Traditionally observed in the United States on November 11 of each year, today is Veterans Day. Intended as a day of honor for those who have served our nation in the military, the holiday was originally conceived by Woodrow Wilson as Armistice Day in 1919.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has created a Veterans Day teacher resource guide to assist educators in helping students learn about this holiday.
Please take this opportunity to thank your local veterans for their service. The sacrifices made by these citizens in the defense of our nation are immeasurable and deeply appreciated.

Review: Text and Programming Editors for Linux
When it comes to something as seemingly simple as editing text (programming, configuration files, etc), there are a surprising number of options available to Linux users. This review focuses on some of the more commonly used tools found in the Ubuntu repositories; most, if not all, of these editors can be easily installed in other Linux distributions. Most of these applications have similar core features, but some integrate more advanced functionality. Read the rest of this entry »
Military Story Disappears From Slashdot’s Front Page
Update – March 22, 2009 – Several hours later, the story has reappeared as part of the normal story flow on the index page. I’m not buying the theory that someone at Slashdot decided the story didn’t appeal to their target audience; last I checked, it had the highest number of comments of any story posted on Saturday.
I’m more than a little confused; a story I’d been following for the better part of seven hours on Slashdot.org (tagline: News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters) on the collision of a U.S. submarine with an amphibious transport craft has completely disappeared from their front page. While it’s still available on their site via a direct link, it vanished from the index. As an active Slashdot submitter and someone who engaged in rather animated conversation in the story (I served in the submarine force), I’d like an explanation.
I attempted to find it in the index by browsing from a separate geographic location via SSH, with no luck. I had the same results browsing Slashdot’s index page with an alternate (not logged in) browser from Georgia. What’s going on? I really just want an explanation for how a story can vanish from Slashdot’s index; this is something I’ve never seen before.
